The dynastic name is derived from soma, 'the moon' and was applied to all those claiming descent from the Moon, but later it came to denote a particular clan. Raja Jujat, in the eighth generation from Lord Brahma, had two sons, Raja Pur, ancestor of the Sombansi rajputs, and Raja Jad, ancestor of the Jadubansi rajputs. Ninety generations later, Raja Ram Deo is found at Jhusi. The early history of the Sombansi rajputs is necessarily traditional, and it is accordingly related that Raja Bijai Sen or Bir Sen or Bai Sen.
